Watershed connections: As readers may have heard, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, at 19 Brick Hill Road in Newcastle, was recently awarded a $35,000 Art Works: Creativity Connects grant to support a series of public programs in collaboration with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. I recently asked Claire Brassil, Watershed’s program and marketing coordinator, to elaborate on what the grant means for the center in 2017.
TOP STORIES
As we look back at the headlines of 2016, the story of the year on the national level was a presidential race unlike any other in our lifetimes.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
We enjoy New Year’s resolutions and the opportunity the New Year gives to symbolically clear the slate and try harder to reach our personal and professional goals.

Christmas from a Biblical (Christian) Perspective
In today’s world, it seems everyone wants to define what Christmas is and how we should observe it. I want to simply share the Biblical story of Christmas, as an explanation of why Christians celebrate. The story is simple and easy to follow and to understand. So let’s hear what God in His book, the Bible, has to tell us about His story of Christmas.
BETTER TO GIVE
As it does every year, the front page of our Christmas edition features a message about the meaning of Christmas in Christianity.
Talkin’ Trash Holiday Toy Recycling
The holiday season is upon us and we find ourselves with closets and boxes filled with discarded toys. What can be done with these unused toys before new ones arrive for the holidays? Toys, in good condition, can be given away. The problem occurs when the toys are unusable. Many of those toys end up in the landfill or an incinerator.
Just a Thought
Aleppo
One of the presidential candidates was criticized because he didn’t know what Aleppo was. People were quick to make remarks like, “He’s so ignorant he didn’t even know what Aleppo was.”
Hindley in Hindsight
Hi, my name is Hindley Wang. My first name is pronounced with a short “i” and a somewhat silent “d.” I am a 19-year-old student at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. I am originally from Shanghai, China, and my original name is Wenjia Wang. I have lived in Newcastle for three years. I live in a dorm room with little natural light but a lot of string lights and a gigantic palm-leaf tapestry on the wall. I like to call myself an artsy individual, because I paint, decorate, play and listen to jazz, and write, but I am still trying to live up to the standard of a “real artist,” whatever that means.
Another View: Confidence Shaken
A few years ago, I was sitting in the departure lounge at BWI. I thought the rumbling I felt was caused by the construction equipment operating just outside the concourse.
A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
We regret to report the loss of another of our local columns.
Ask the Vet Canine osteoarthritis -- degenerative joint disease
If a dog tires easily, limps, is slow to rise, or is reluctant to climb stairs, run, or jump, canine osteoarthritis may be the cause. Osteoarthritis involves an inflammatory response, cartilage degeneration, and loss of collagen and nutrients in the joints.
The Present of Our Presence
Every time of year has its own challenges in terms of teens using alcohol and other drugs, but the holiday season can be particularly challenging.
