This beautiful golden female cat came in as a stray to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter from Dresden two weeks ago. Sugar was now 15 years old. She had been found in an abandoned house. A deputy sheriff brought her to the shelter almost three years after she disappeared from the Gilmans’ home, 30 miles away in Winthrop.
The shelter checked this lovely animal two times to see if she was microchipped. The second time they found the chip! They called the microchip company and were given the name of a gentleman from Winthrop. He was called immediately. His widow answered the phone, and when asked if Mr. Gilman was home, she told them he had passed away three years ago.
“Well, we have your cat,” said shelter staff member Tammy Steinmetz. “We found a microchip with your husband’s name and telephone number on it.”
“I can’t believe it! It’s as if a part of my husband has returned to me,” Leslie tearfully replied. “Oh my God! My gracious! How wonderful! Are you sure it’s Sugar?”
Tammy, now also in tears, said, “We think so. Come and see her and take her home.”
Later in the day, Gilman and her daughter came to the shelter to see if this miracle was true.
Yes! It was her Sugar. The entire staff at the shelter was now in tears. Sugar recognized her mom at once.
There is no greater love than that bond we have for our forever valentines.
This is not only a love story of reunion but a love story about microchips. It’s so easy to do. It does not hurt the pet. No animal leaves the shelter without being microchipped. It can be done in seconds.
The shelter has the magic wand, as do all shelters and veterinarians, to pass over lost animals to see if they have a chip and a forever home.
Please get your animal a microchip for Valentine’s Day if you haven’t already done so. Love can speak from far places when one of our animals goes missing.
Happy Valentine’s Day from the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. Please visit today and bring a valentine home with you.
