Linda Foster, Lincoln County Animal Shelter’s bookkeeper, brought her grandson, Ashton Foster, to try out reading to cats on the cat porch at LCAS. The book Ashton chose was “Togus Takes the Train.” It was the “purrfect” choice.
“Togus” is a coloring book about a cat that looked out the window one day and saw snow falling. The wind was cold and blowing. He became concerned and saddened by the fact that many folks did not have forever homes or a warm coat like his to keep them warm. How does Togus solve his problem?
The book is based on the real-life cat Togus’ real train trip in December 2010. Channel 6’s own Don Carrigan wrote the narrative with illustrations by Thomas Block. All the proceeds from the coloring book are being donated to charitable causes.
Ashton’s reading of “Togus” not only entertained the cats – some of whom had to be coaxed a bit – but also entertained the two-legged visitors in the cat room at the time. All “Togus” books sold at the shelter will benefit LCAS animals. Please help the animals and buy this imaginative coloring book that will delight all crayon artists.
Ashton will be in the fifth grade next year. He goes to the Bristle Elementary School. He reads very well and one cat in particular seemed to be entertained by the tale of Togus and the train. The series of photographs accompanying this column tell the story.
I hope the reading program becomes a biweekly event at the shelter. I think all kids would benefit by reading aloud to the cats. It may also be beneficial to those who are having a bit of trouble reading aloud, or others who are learning English as a second language.
The books would be chosen by Lincoln County libraries or by elementary school teachers. The teachers would also suggest a child for each reading. The cats, however, will choose the reader. Perhaps one or two cats may like a story about a dog. Or how about a mouse who loves cats.
Call me if interested. Kelly Brook, “All Four Feet,” 586-5604. I will coordinate with the shelter and the chaperones of the readers about best dates and times, how long each reading will take, and any other considerations that may come to mind.
