The Alna Board of Selectmen will contact the Department of Transportation about the possibility of establishing a school zone speed limit by Juniper Hill School.
The selectmen made the decision at their Nov. 29 meeting after reviewing the advice of a Maine Municipal Association attorney.
According to Senior Staff Attorney Rebecca Warren Seel, the DOT has the authority to establish speed limits in Alna, although the town can ask the DOT to establish or adjust a speed limit.
First Selectman David Abbott and Third Selectman David Reingardt said they think the area around the school should have an appropriate speed limit and signs to warn motorists.
“I think it’s probably a good idea to post something, either school zone or low speed limit or something,” Abbott said.
Reingardt said he would contact the DOT.
According to town officials, the school posted a 15 mph speed limit, then removed the signs after concerns were raised about the legal process to change a speed limit.
The speed limit on Golden Ridge Road is 45 mph, Alna Fire Chief Mike Trask said.
