A Wiscasset man was assaulted and robbed in the parking lot of the Wiscasset Shaw’s Supermarket Jan. 10.
According to police reports, Andrew Whalen, 25, of Auburn, and his girlfriend Amanda Darling, 24, were meeting Steven and Danielle Ward, 36 and 28, of Hope, in the Shaw’s parking lot when the assault took place.
Upon entering the Wards’ vehicle, Whalen was suddenly pulled out of the car, beaten, and robbed by an unidentified man in a black, hooded sweatshirt.
Whalen told police that the hooded man stole his wallet and $50 in cash.
After robbing the couple and their friends, the suspect fled into the nearby woods.
Police were able to recover the suspect’s sweatshirt and track him to the train tracks intersecting Old Ferry Road before they were forced to abandon the search.
A preliminary investigation has indicated the incident was “isolated” and “involving drugs and subjects from outside the area.”
“There is no need to be alarmed,” Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline said.
According to Cline, Whalen, Darling, and the Wards have not been cooperative in the investigation.
While he would not elaborate further on the record, Cline said that Whalen, Darling, and the Wards’ meeting might have involved drugs.
“It appears thus far that it’s a drug-related incident,” Cline said.
Lincoln and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Offices assisted the Wiscasset Police Dept. at the scene.
According to a statement released by the Wiscasset Police Dept., the suspect is described as a white male, between 5-ft., 7-in., and 5-ft., 9-ins., tall, from 20-25 years old, with short, blonde hair.
At the time of the crime, the suspect was wearing a dark colored hoodie, light-colored jeans, and sneakers.
Whalen was treated at Miles Memorial Hospital and subsequently released.
Those with any information regarding the incident are asked to contact the Wiscasset Police Dept. at 882-8202.
