HappeningsNow that our “Iolanthe” production is a pleasant memory, this week we move back to visiting with some of our favorites: Maggie Smith, The DaPonte String Quartet, Luciano Pavarotti, and our own Jane Dahmen. This coming Wednesday also is the final night of our promotion with King Eider’s Pub. Don’t miss the chance to pick up movie vouchers that can be used all the way into June!

 

‘Son of Saul’ (1 hour, 47 minutes, in German, Hungarian, Polish, and Yiddish with English subtitles)Winner of the Best Foreign Picture Academy Award and Golden Globe. In the horror of 1944 Auschwitz, a prisoner forced to burn the corpses of his own people finds moral survival upon trying to salvage from the flames the body of a boy he takes for his son. Final screenings at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday, March 24.

 

‘The Lady in the Van’ (PG-13; 1 hour, 44 minutes)This film tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway … for 15 years. Starring Dame Maggie Smith reprising the role she played on stage. Playing at 3 p.m., Friday, March 25; 7 p.m., Saturday, March 26; 3 and 7 p.m., Sunday, March 27; and 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 30 and 31.

DaPonte String QuartetThe DaPonte String Quartet will present its “Easter Program” with guest artists Suzanne Nance, soprano, and Joshua Miller, baritone, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 25.

 

Verdi’s ‘Requiem’Originally performed at La Scala in 1967 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Toscanini’s death, this production with the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro alla Scala was presented in Moscow, Montreal, New York, and Milan. It was recorded on film in 1967 with the young Luciano Pavarotti replacing Carlo Bergonzi. Playing at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 26. Please note the corrected show time of 1 p.m.

 

Talking Art in Maine: Intimate ConversationsA series of intimate, one-on-one conversations between artist Jane Dahmen and notable artists and curators who have made a substantial contribution to the arts in the state of Maine kicks off another season. For nearly three decades, John Bisbee has welded and forged 12-inch spikes under the mantra “only nails, always different.” Free, 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29.
