A fire at 117 Gaecklein Road in Boothbay on Jan. 8 caused the total loss of the barn on the property, according to Boothbay Fire Chief Richard Spofford.
The page for the fire came at about 5:30 p.m., and departments from Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport Island and Edgecomb responded, Spofford said.
Vaughn Anthony, who owns the property, noticed the fire when his dog started barking, Spofford said.
“It had a pretty good start on us, and luckily he saw it before it got big enough to get to the house,” Spofford said.
The departments shuttled water from a stream on Barters Island Road one truck at time to combat the blaze.
Spofford said his department had returned to its station around 10 p.m. when they were called back out for a rekindling of the fire.
“We had to get the excavator from the town of Boothbay. We were over there till midnight hauling it apart,” Spofford said. “It was kind of dangerous, we didn’t want to put anybody in [the barn.]”
No one was injured and there were no animals in the barn, Spofford said.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be looking into the cause of the fire today, Spofford said.
