The Boothbay Harbor Police Dept. is asking the public to help identify a suspect in up to five burglaries this summer.
The department’s Facebook page features several photographs of a person wearing glasses and a mask, all from a security camera at Pier 1 Pizza. The burglary took place Aug. 22 shortly before 2 a.m.
The police suspect the same individual hit three businesses this weekend – Harbor Imports, The Lobster Dock and Pier 1 Pizza, Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Robert Hasch said.
The burglar didn’t take anything from The Lobster Dock, as the owners had removed cash and other valuables. In the other incidents, the thief took cash and jewelry.
In one case, Hasch believes the burglar used a boat to approach a target from underneath the pier.
The department thinks “there’s a possibility” the same person is responsible for this weekend’s burglaries, as well as burglaries at Tigger Leather and Aura Hair Design on June 22 and 25, respectively, Hasch said.
A sketch, available on the department’s Facebook page and in the online archives of The Lincoln County News, pictures a man with a thick mustache and a baseball cap as the suspect in the Aura Hair Design incident. The man in the sketch did not wear glasses.
A speedy apprehension of the suspect is of particular interest to the department, as he attempted to assault a bystander with a crowbar when the person interrupted the burglary at Aura Hair Design.
The department is following up on each of the numerous tips it has received, Hasch said, and posting extra patrols downtown.
Hasch is confident that a citizen can provide police with the right lead.
“There’s someone out there who knows who this is,” he said.
The police ask anyone with information about the incidents to call the department at 633-5616 or 633-2451 and ask businesses to “take extra precautions” and avoid leaving cash overnight.
