A Belfast woman on probation was arrested following an alleged altercation with another motorist on Route 1 in Wiscasset the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Elizabeth Brown, 26, of Belfast, was arrested for driving to endanger and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, both class E misdemeanors.
According to a press release from the Wiscasset Police Department, Brown was charged after allegedly making an unsafe pass on Bath Road in the vicinity of Holbrook Pond and short-stopping twice causing a motorist to rear-end her vehicle.
Brown, currently on probation, was placed on a probation hold and is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail.
According to Wiscasset Police, Brown was pulled over in Edgecomb by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein who had been flagged down on Main Street in Wiscasset by the other motorist involved in the incident.
Leverett Davis, 61, of Freeport, was on the phone with Lincoln County 9-1-1 when he spotted Nein and requested assistance.
Brown was escorted to the Wiscasset Police Department where Chief Troy Cline conducted the investigation. “This is a fine example of the teamwork and cooperation between Lincoln County Communications, the Sheriff’s Department and Wiscasset PD to resolve a potentially deadly situation,” Cline said in the press release.
According to the Wiscasset Police press release, Davis claimed he was traveling northbound on Bath Road in a 2014 Volkswagon SUV when he noticed another vehicle approaching him from behind at a high rate of speed. The speed limit for that portion of Bath Road is 35 mph.
Brown, driving a 2003 Chevrolet sedan, passed Davis’ vehicle nearly hitting it, Davis reported. Davis pursued Brown’s vehicle in an effort to get identifying information to report to the police. Brown short-stopped, causing Davis to rear-end her, and then continued to drive away, Davis reported.
The accident caused property damage to both vehicles and was a reportable accident. Davis continued to pursue Brown’s vehicle, and honked his horn in an effort to get Brown to stop, Cline wrote. Brown again short-stopped, causing another rear-end accident, gave Davis “the finger” and drove away, Davis reported.
According to the press release, Cline discovered an open 750 ml bottle of rum in Brown’s vehicle and numerous bottles of prescription pills. Brown’s probation officer ordered a drug and alcohol test and Brown tested positive for Suboxone and amphetamines.
Brown has a prescription for Suboxone but not for the amphetamines in her system, Cline wrote. She was placed on a probation hold due to new criminal charges and violating her probation, according to the release.
Brown is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 9.
“These ‘road rage’ incidents can be avoided if people just slow down and think before acting in an aggressive and reckless manner,” Cline said.
