A Boothbay man and two teenage girls suffered injuries, some serious, in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Butler Road in Boothbay early Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Daniel Dugay, 18, of Boothbay; a 17-year-old Boothbay Harbor girl, and a 15-year-old Boothbay girl were transported by ambulance from the scene, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release.
“Some of the injuries sustained in this crash are believed to be serious in nature,” according to the press release.
Benjamin Hutchings, 19, of Boothbay Harbor, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro south in the vicinity of 218 Butler Road, near its intersection with Beath and Country Club roads.
“As the vehicle entered a sharp left turn, it left the roadway, struck an embankment, and rolled,” according to the press release. “The vehicle came to rest on its roof.”
The accident was reported at 1:42 a.m.
The sheriff’s office obtained a blood specimen from Hutchings, which is standard procedure in any case involving serious injury, according to the press release. Deputies will work to determine if alcohol, drugs, speed, or some combination thereof were factors in the crash.
Dugay was in the passenger seat and three teenage girls were in the back seat, including the two with injuries and a 17-year-old Boothbay girl.
Hutchings and Dugay were wearing seat belts. The sheriff’s office “is still working to confirm” whether the three girls were wearing seat belts.
Hutchings and the 17-year-old Boothbay girl declined ambulance transport, according to the press release.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Jared Mitkus is the primary investigating officer. Sgt. Daniel Sceviour assisted at the scene. Sgt. Jason Nein is conducting a crash reconstruction.
The sheriff’s office will continue to investigate the cause of the accident for several days. It does not anticipate criminal charges in the near future. When it completes the investigation, deputies will meet with the district attorney’s office to determine if criminal prosecution is appropriate.
The Boothbay and Wiscasset fire departments and the Boothbay Region and Wiscasset ambulance services responded to the scene. The accident and investigation closed Beath Road for about two hours.
