A 16-year-old Boothbay Region High School student was arrested shortly before noon Monday after police were told he had brought a gun to school.
The student was arrested without incident. No one was injured.
Boothbay Harbor police Chief Robert Hasch said the incident began at about 11:16 a.m. when the school said they had information about a student with a gun.
Hasch and BRHS School Resource Officer Larry Brown went to the school, which had been locked down by Principal Dan Welch who directed them to a classroom.
“We walked into the classroom. When the student saw us he rolled his eyes and we disarmed him,” said Hasch.
Hasch said the student was armed with a .40 caliber Glock automatic pistol with one bullet. “That is a serious gun, the same gun our police department carries,” he said.
Although Hasch said he was unable to provide additional details, School Union 49 Supt. Eileen King said the student claimed he intended to hurt himself.
In a letter sent home to school parents, King said the student’s intentions to hurt himself were bolstered by a note found among his belongings.
