Just as the evening commute began, high winds caused a tree to take out a transformer and power wires at the Bristol Rd. near Cross St., effectively closing the road to through traffic for an undetermined amount of time.
Damariscotta Police and Fire units are on the scene. Traffic is being redirected from Bristol Rd. and Main St. onto alternative routes for traffic heading into Bristol. It is unknown how long it will take a Central Maine Power crew to take care of the wires and reopen the road.
