Two toddlers are reportedly recuperating in Maine Medical Center in Portland today after an accident in their Westport Island home last night.
Westport Island Fire Chief Bob Mooney confirmed the incident while declining to discuss specifics of the case, citing federal medical privacy laws. “I am not sure what I can say so I would rather err on the side of caution,” Mooney said.
Mooney confirmed that his department responded to a call that involved injuries to two three-year-old children.
The injuries were serious enough to require both children to be transported to the hospital via LifeFlight. Westport Island responders were on scene for about an hour, Mooney said.
“There was no abuse or negligence,” Mooney said, stressing the point. “It was just a very unfortunate accident.”
Multiple sources report the accident involved the toddlers falling through an air vent some distance to the floor in the basement below.
