The Damariscotta Hannaford store on Bus. Rt. 1 has closed for the evening after workmen shoveling the roof today uncovered a potential problem.
Hannaford spokesman Mike Norton said workers noticed water escaping through the roof early this afternoon. Although the roof does not appear to be in danger of failure, Hannaford officials made the decision to close the store around 2 p.m. as a precautionary measure, Norton said.
A structural engineer is currently on site examining the structure, Norton said. Hannaford plans to reopen the store as soon as the roof’s integrity, and the public’s safety, is assured.
“We hope to be able to open tomorrow morning,” Norton said. “The key there is we are going to open when it is safe to open.”
