Detectives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have arrested and charged the person they allege was driving one of the two cars that struck Loren St. Cyr in September 2008.
Around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, detectives arrested 23-year-old Roxann Berry of Windsor and charged her with the felony offense of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury. This arrest was the result of the ongoing investigation into a traffic crash in Jefferson Sept. 20, 2008 that resulted in the death of St. Cyr of Newcastle.
Deputies and detectives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have been working jointly on this investigation after it was learned from autopsy reports provided by the State of Maine Medical Examiners Office that St. Cyr had been struck by two separate vehicles prior to his death.
The second vehicle involved and its operator was identified the night of the crash when its operator stopped and remained at the scene as is required by law. The operator of the second vehicle was not charged with any wrongdoing as a result of the crash.
According to the LCSO, a Lincoln County Deputy recently received information from a concerned citizen. This information resulted in detectives from the Sheriff’s Office identifying Berry as a person of interest. When confronted by detectives, Berry eventually admitted to being the driver of the first vehicle that struck St. Cyr.
Detectives from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have seized a 1996 Subaru Legacy as a result of their investigation. This vehicle is believed to have been operated by Ms. Berry at the time St. Cyr was struck. It currently is being examined at the Maine State Police Crime Lab in Augusta.
Leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury is a class C crime in the State of Maine. Class C crimes in the State of Maine can result in up to five years of incarceration and up to $5000 in fines.
Berry was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. It is expected that she will next appear in the Lincoln County Superior Court on August 26.
The facts supporting this case will be again reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office in Wiscasset prior to its presentation to the Lincoln County Grand Jury later this summer. It is possible that additional charges may be entered at that time.
