At his sentencing hearing in Kennebec County Superior Court today, John A. Okie, 22, Newcastle, learned he will likely spend the next 50 years in prison for the July 2007 murders of his father and a former classmate.
Justice Joseph M. Jabar sentenced Okie to serve two consecutive 30 year terms for the murder of Alexandra Mills, 19, in Wayne and the murder of his father, John S. Okie, 59, at the home the Okies shared in Newcastle.
Okie will be 72 before he can qualify to be considered for release.
After eight days of testimony and slightly more than an hour of deliberations, a jury determined Okie’s guilt on Dec. 19, 2008. Before receiving his sentence, for the first time Okie publicly expressed sorrow for the deaths of Mills and his father.
“I am deeply sorry,” Okie said. “This should not have happened. I am terribly sorry. That’s all I can say.”
