Former Wiscasset town clerk Sandra Johnson pled not guilty to theft by unauthorized taking at her arraignment on March 26 in Lincoln County Superior Court.
Johnson, 45, was arrested last October in connection with missing funds a forensic audit revealed to be $90,006.
The criminal case has cost an estimated $46,000 in payroll and other costs to the Town of Wiscasset, according to a town office report.
Justice Donald Marden gave the defense attorney 45 days to file any motions relative to the case and posted bail at $20,000 secured.
District Atty. Geoffrey Rushlau, prosecuting attorney, said to save costs, town records germane to the case have been photocopied and recommended Johnson’s attorney inspect the town office records rather than re-photocopy the documents.
