A head on collision involving two motor vehicles closed a section of Rt. 1 in Edgecomb for over two and half hours Monday afternoon.
During the road closure Lincoln County Deputies worked to reconstruct the crash and other emergency responders treated three people that were injured in the accident.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, because Deputies are not yet certain all the families of those involved in the crash have been notified; no names will be released until Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
Based on the preliminary investigation, LCSO reports the accident occurred around 12:35 p.m. when a northbound 1995 Subaru station wagon struck a guardrail in the southbound lane on Rt. 1 before striking a southbound 2009 Mercury Marquis head on.
As of this posting, the investigation is in its early stages; Deputies do not know at this time why the Subaru station wagon was operating in the opposing lane.
The driver of the Subaru was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital with apparent head and neck injuries. The driver of the Mercury was transported to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick with what appeared to be minor injuries.
A passenger in the Mercury was air lifted from the scene with potentially life threatening injuries to his head and internal organs. Due to the serious nature of the injuries, Deputies obtained blood samples from both drivers. Deputies do not suspect alcohol or speed was a factor in this crash.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Edgecomb, Wiscasset and Newcastle Fire Departments, Wiscasset EMS, Central Lincoln County Ambulance, Boothbay Harbor Police Dept., and the Maine Dept. of Transportation all assisted LCSO deputies at the scene.
