Former Wiscasset selectmen Karl Tarbox was found not guilty of gross sexual assault in Lincoln County Superior Court today.
The jury deliberated a little less than two hours before delivering the verdict shortly before 4:30 p.m. The verdict concluded a two day trial that opened March 17.
The case against Tarbox stemmed from an incident that took place on Halloween night in 2008.
“It was too bad Karl had to go through a year and half of this,” said defense attorney Stephen Langsdorf. “There is no doubt there wasn’t sufficient evidence to show that he committed the crime.”
Lincoln County District Attorney Geoff Rushlau expressed disappointment with the jury’s decision.
“We put forward as much evidence as we had available to prove our case,” Rushlau said.
Tarbox served briefly on the Wiscasset Board of Selectmen, resigning in Oct. 2004.
The Lincoln County News will follow with a complete report of the trial in the March 25 edition.
