Residents of Bremen, and others visiting the town, will have an opportunity to visit the old Bremen Town House on Sun., Aug. 5, 1-4 p.m. when the Town House Committee hosts its biggest fundraising event of the year.
Chocolate Sunday, always the first Sunday in August, will offer a large variety of treats, including an ice cream bar.
As visitors sample the desserts, they will also be able to view the collection of memorabilia and historic documents on exhibit in the Town House and hear music from Esther Mariani.
Since 2000, the building, built in 1874, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Committee Chairwoman Martha Varsano said, July 17, that the listing was the result of the efforts of Dianne O’Connor, who developed the Town House Committee as an offshoot of the Patriotic Club.
Varsano said the committee has also hosted events such as a ’50s dance and the Conservation Committee’s annual Local Harvest Dinner, this year on Sat., Sept. 15.
Funds raised from committee events will be used to help meet the costs of operating the Town House. The building is owned and maintained by the town of Bremen.
“Chocolate Sunday is a thank you to the town,” Varsano said. “It [Bremen Town House] required extra money to bring it up to the condition that it is in now.”
She said one side of the building is painted each summer, using labor from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office work crew, and that the roof was replaced approximately five years ago.
The Town House is available, free of charge to Bremen residents and organizations. A deposit is required and out of town residents are invited to apply for use of the building.
Chocolate Sunday will take place Sun., Aug. 5 from 1-4 p.m.
