At their meeting on Feb. 3, the Bremen Board of Selectmen approved a five-year, $618,720 contract extension with their plowing contractor, Jody Sprague of Transport and Excavation Inc., based in Damariscotta.
The board decided to move to a five-year contract because it facilitates budgeting for the town and allows Sprague to invest in new equipment, which he can now finance over five years, said Selectman Tom Kostenbader at the meeting.
Kostenbader investigated the cost of plowing in other local towns, and Sprague’s price is slightly lower than what most towns are paying, Kostenbader said.
Sprague is responsible for plowing the 27 miles of town roads as well as municipal parking lots, such as the town office and fire station.
Kostenbader said the town is happy to re-sign with Sprague, and he’s heard a lot of positive feedback about Sprague’s work.
Several residents at meeting said they were pleased with the condition of Bremen’s roads and thanked Sprague for his efforts.
“Thank you so much,” Bremen resident Jan Kemper said to Sprague at the meeting. “Even with the snow this year, you don’t have to worry about it; you can get where you want to go – at least in Bremen.”
