Despite residents and a town official raising a variety of concerns, Bremen voters authorized the town to expend up to $60,000 for improving a town-owned waterfront property at special town meeting Dec. 12.
The town purchased the property, commonly referred to as the Hay property, earlier this year and the Bremen Board of Selectmen have since been planning a number of improvements to the site, including creating a gravel drive, a parking area, and stairway access to Broad Cove.
At the special town meeting, the original warrant article, asking for approval to expend $60,000 total in an unspecified ratio from the town’s “unexpended funds” and capital improvement funds, was amended to seek approval to expend $40,000 from the former and $20,000 from the latter.
The amended motion specified the use of such funds for improvement of the Hay property as matching funds for a Department of Transportation Small Harbor Improvement Program grant.
The motion passed by more than 2 to 1, with at least 11 votes yea and five votes nay.
Each of the five nay voters raised concerns or questions about the proposed project, touching on issues such as wildlife, conservation, and use of the funds for other projects around town.
Selectmen said if the grant does not come through, the funds would not be expended.
