Mark Zaccadelli and Nick MacPhee, both of Bristol, broke RAW American Powerlifting Federation Maine records at the Maine state championships held at Fournier Karate in Westbrook on Saturday. Sixty power lifters competed in the event.
MacPhee broke his own record in the dead lift in the 198-pound weight division. MacPhee dead-lifted 700 pounds to break his old record of 667 pounds.
Zaccadelli turned a lot of heads in his first competition by breaking four records in the 123-pound RAW division. He was an unknown going into the tournament, having trained for just six months before the competition. Zaccadelli said he had been working out for a year and a half prior to beginning his training.
It was MacPhee who got Zaccadelli started in powerlifting after MacPhee put on a small clinic at the Resolution Fitness Center in Waldoboro. “He asked me to join him and work out with him,” Zaccadelli said of getting started.
Zaccadelli broke the 123-pound RAW APF state records in the squat with a lift of 330 pounds; the dead lift with a lift of 400 pounds, and the bench press with a lift of 270 pounds. He also broke the combined record at 1,000 pounds.
Zaccadelli had to bust 11 pounds to make the 123-pound weight division. He plans to compete again in the fall in the 132-pound division.
His goal is to set all four records at both the 132- and 148-pound divisions.
A third Bristol man, Jacob Prior, set two personal best lifts in the bench (325) and the squat (545) and placed third overall in the 242-pound weight division.
“We all worked really hard for it. It wasn’t easy,” Zaccadelli said.
