The Bristol School Committee awarded the bid to remove and replace the overboard discharge system at Bristol Consolidated School to Hanley Construction Inc. Oct. 3.
The Bristol contractor bid $66,780, the low bid for the project.
The work will take place this fall if Bristol citizens approve the project at a special town meeting Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the town office.
The special town meeting will ask voters to decide whether to take up to $86,000 from surplus for the work. The Dept. of Environmental Protection would reimburse half the cost through its Overboard Discharge Elimination Program.
The $86,000 figure includes the Hanley Construction bid, $9041 for design of the new septic system and an approximately $10,000 contingency.
The replacement of the overboard discharge with the septic system, on town property next to the athletics field, will address citizen concerns and improve the health of the Pemaquid River and its shellfish flats, AOS 93 Superintendent Steve Bailey said.
