A 30-year-old Bristol woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the leg in July 2014 has reached a plea deal.
Abigail J. Thomas pleaded guilty to class D domestic violence assault and false public report Monday, Sept. 21, according to court documents. In return, a charge of class B aggravated assault was dismissed.
A court order delays sentence for a year and subjects Thomas to certain conditions. If she abides by the conditions, the state will replace the domestic violence assault charge with a disorderly conduct charge.
Thomas would then receive concurrent sentences of 70 days for the disorderly conduct charge and 30 days for the false public report charge. She would receive credit for time served, which means she could avoid returning to jail altogether.
The order prohibits the possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs, allows random searches and tests; requires general, mental-health, and substance-abuse counseling; and requires attendance at a recovery group.
Thomas will return to the Lincoln County Courthouse for a hearing to determine the outcome of the case at 1 p.m. Sept. 26, 2016. She will remain free on personal recognizance bail in the meantime.
Court documents now list addresses for Thomas in Bangor and Bristol.
Thomas reported a domestic violence assault at the home in the Pemaquid Villas mobile home park where she was living with Aaron D. Curtin, 41, on July 23, 2014.
Thomas told Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Jared Mitkus that Curtin had choked and attempted to stab her, resulting in a defensive wound to her hand, according to Mitkus’ probable cause statement. She said Curtin had then fled.
Deputies found Curtin hiding in a closet, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Michael Murphy. Curtin said Thomas caused her own injury and stabbed him in the leg.
Deputies initially arrested Curtin on charges of class B aggravated assault, class D domestic violence assault, and class D refusing to submit to arrest.
Two days later, Thomas contacted the sheriff’s office and allegedly confessed to Curtin’s version of events. She was arrested Aug. 1 and indicted Sept. 9 on charges of class B aggravated assault and class D false public report.
Neither Curtin nor Thomas were seriously hurt. “They were both minor injuries,” Murphy said.
The charges against Curtin have since been dismissed.
