An Oxford County man who burglarized Damariscotta’s Coastal Car Wash in February 2014 was sentenced to five years in prison at Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Glen G. Michaud, 52, of Norway, pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the Feb. 2, 2014 burglary in Damariscotta and the burglary of a Farmingdale Dunkin’ Donuts the next day, according to the Kennebec Journal. He also agreed to pay $1,600 in restitution.
The Maine break-ins were two of 19 burglaries of businesses in Maine and New Hampshire, according to the initial report of Michaud’s arrest in The Lincoln County News.
The Gorham, N.H. Police Department arrested Michaud a week after the Damariscotta burglary in the act of burglarizing a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise.
Michaud pleaded guilty to the Gorham burglary – and another burglary of the same Dunkin’ Donuts 10 days prior to his capture – May 30, 2014, according to The Berlin Daily Sun Managing Editor Barbara Tetreault. He received a sentence of two to five years with a 111-day credit for time served. He must also pay $852.13 in restitution.
Michaud confessed to a total of 19 burglaries and provided details about the crimes after his arrest, then-Damariscotta Police Officer Ryan Chubbuck said at the time. The existence or status of charges in the other burglaries was not immediately available.
Michaud forced his way into the car wash and attempted to pry open a change dispenser, according to his Dec. 1, 2014 indictment. He told police he fled after seeing flashing blue lights nearby and mistakenly concluding the police were closing in on him.
“He dropped his stuff and ran,” Chubbuck said. He said he spent the next four hours hiding in the area because he thought police were searching for him.
The lights were just a coincidence, however. A Damariscotta officer had stopped a vehicle at the Rite Aid adjacent to the car wash at 12:42 a.m., Chubbuck said.
Michaud has a history as a burglar – he served 10 years in prison for burglarizing 123 homes and businesses in 10 of Maine’s 16 counties, according to the Kennebec Journal. He was ordered to pay more than $130,000 in restitution for those cases.
Michaud had barely been out of prison for a year when he burglarized the car wash.
A Lincoln County grand jury indicted Michaud on charges of class C burglary, class D attempted theft and criminal mischief, and class E possession of burglary tools.
The Lincoln County indictment lists an address for Michaud in the Oxford County town of Norway. The Kennebec Journal article refers to him as a resident of the Aroostook County town of Smyrna.
