A water main replacement project is underway along Bus. Rt. 1 in Damariscotta.
The water main replacement precedes a sidewalk construction project in the same area. Both projects extend approximately from the intersection of Church and Main streets to Coastal Marketplace.
Great Salt Bay Sanitary District Water Division Manager Scott Abbotoni expects the water main phase to wrap up ahead of schedule, either at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
The project replaces existing cast iron pipes with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, Abbotoni said.
The Great Salt Bay Sanitary District will pay for the water main replacement, while a grant from the Maine Dept. of Transportation, along with a match from Damariscotta, is funding the sidewalk construction.
Damariscotta contractor Hagar Enterprises is the contractor for both projects.
Damariscotta Supt. of Roads, Buildings and Grounds Steve Reynolds said Hagar aims to start sidewalk construction immediately after completion of the water main replacement.
The contract calls for the sidewalk construction project to wrap up June 30.
