Thursday, Jan. 22, Camden National Bank announced a first-of-its-kind, statewide program to discuss the topic of homelessness in Maine and provide support to the more than 7,500 individuals, children, and families in the state without a home.
Camden National Bank’s new Hope@Home program is founded on its dedication to supporting Maine communities and helping fellow Mainers thrive by donating funds to the more than 50 service organizations who provide the state’s homeless with food, shelter, life skills, and, most importantly, hope.
In 2015, through the Hope@Home program, Camden National Bank will donate $100 for every new home it finances to a homeless shelter in the community of the new homeowner.
“Homelessness is a growing issue in our state, and we believe it is time to help our neighbors in need. A home provides a lot more than shelter; it provides dignity, purpose, and hope. At Camden National Bank, we wanted to find a way to support all of the great organizations in our state already working on this issue,” said CEO and President Gregory Dufour. “Hope@Home is just one way we can help.”
Homelessness in Maine increased 26 percent in 2013, and about 250 homeless Mainers stay in shelters for six months or more.
In Knox County, where Dufour resides with his family, there are about 155 homeless families and individuals, including single adults, victims of domestic violence, and unaccompanied youth. In 2014, 35 people in Portland lost their lives as the result of not having a place to live.
“I know our organization is not only grateful for the financial support, but also for the bank’s help in raising awareness around the issue of homelessness in Bangor and across the state,” said Dennis Marble, executive director of the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.
