Motorists on Rt. 1 in Wiscasset reported Oct. 14 that a number of campaign signs for U.S. Senator Susan Collins had been vandalized by someone who spray painted a symbol resembling a swastika on them. While the swastika image was painted in reverse, the intent of the vandal was clear, according to observers including Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline.
The swastika image was made infamous as the Nazi party symbol during the World War II era, and continues to be used as a symbol of hate and aggression. Because of this, Chief Cline has stated that defacing the campaign signs may rise to the level of a hate crime, and he has contacted the Maine Attorney General’s office regarding the case.
Other Collins signs in Pittston and Farmingdale were vandalized in a similar manner, according to reports.
