The raffle of a secondhand Mazda sedan will raise money to place more American flags on utility poles in Damariscotta, Newcastle, and Nobleboro this spring.
Nobleboro resident Richard McFarland continues to spearhead the effort to raise money for the flags. Rockland Ford donated the car.
The 2000 Mazda 626 has 188,000 miles, McFarland said. The car has an automatic transmission and new brakes and tires. The body has no rust.
The car passed inspection at Henny Automotive in Nobleboro and the garage will place a new state inspection sticker on the car at the time of sale.
Raffle tickets sell for $10 apiece or $50 for six and are available at the Nobleboro Village Store. The drawing will take place behind Renys Underground in Damariscotta March 29.
Last year, there were flags on utility poles on Main Street in Damariscotta and Newcastle from the intersection with Academy Hill and Mills Road in Newcastle to The American Legion Wells-Hussey Post No. 42 in Damariscotta.
This year, McFarland plans to add flags in Damariscotta from the Legion post to the junction of Business Route 1 and Route 1 and on Biscay Road from Main Street to the fire station; in Newcastle from Main Street to the River Road fire station and along the Route 1 north off-ramp; and in Nobleboro on Center Street from Morgan Hill Road to Nobleboro Central School.
McFarland thanked Clark Auto Parts and Coastal Car Wash in Damariscotta, Henny Automotive in Nobleboro, and the workers at Central Tire in Waldoboro for their work to prepare the car for sale.
