A 64-year-old Whitefield man died when a car struck him as he walked across Head Tide Road to check his mail the afternoon of Tuesday, July 9.
Christopher Simpson had parked his car before crossing the street to the mailbox at 251 Head Tide Road, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Chubbuck. Eric Sroka, 38, of Nobleboro, was driving a 2004 Ford Ranger south on Head Tide Road.
Sroka rounded a bend and came upon Simpson in the road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Sroka was not able to avoid Simpson.
Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors.
Chubbuck did not comment on the extent of Simpson’s injuries at the scene. Lt. Brendan Kane, also of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, later confirmed that Simpson died at the scene.
A LifeFlight helicopter had been dispatched to a landing zone, which Kane believed to be a field near the scene.
The incident is under investigation, Chubbuck said. He expected emergency services to remain on scene for a few hours. Traffic was reduced to one lane for a time.
Delta Ambulance, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Whitefield Fire Department, and Whitefield First Responders were at the scene.
The Brunswick Police Department reconstructed the incident, Kane said.
The incident was reported at 4:40 p.m.
