A 49-year-old man was medically evacuated from his boat five miles southeast of Boothbay Harbor on Monday after a man on another boat noticed the victim was in medical distress, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The good Samaritan boater used his VHF marine radio to summon help after he spotted the victim drifting in and out of consciousness at approximately 11:30 a.m. aboard a 20-foot commercial fishing boat. The victim has not been identified, and his current condition was not available at the time of this posting.
A 25-foot Response Boat crew and 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew responded from Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor. The 25-foot Response Boat crew located the fishing boat, took the ill man aboard the response boat, and transported him to Boothbay Region Ambulance Service personnel who were waiting at Station Boothbay Harbor to take the man to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, according to USCG.
“It was very fortunate for the patient that a good Samaritan was in the area and could relay the man’s distress,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher Kiener, an operations specialist at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England’s command center.
The 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew towed the fishing boat safely to Carousel Marina in Boothbay Harbor.
