Coastal Christian School in Waldoboro will break ground next month on a new gymnasium.
The school has already raised over $80,000 in donations to pay for the first stages of construction on the 8000-sq.ft. facility, said Acting Principal Dorcelle Brown, but they “still have a ways to go,” she said.
The next steps in construction will be completed as money comes in, Brown said.
The new gym will house physical education classes, school plays and allow the school to host larger assemblies, such as graduation. Currently, the school uses the Waldoboro First Baptist Church gym for sports and other large events.
To raise money for the project, the school has been soliciting donations and hosting a series of monthly public suppers, which will resume this fall, Brown said. Most of their donations have come from people within the school and surrounding churches.
“We’ve never borrowed any money,” Brown said. “We believe God can provide it.”
The school will also raise money for the gym at their Spring Fling on Sat., May 14 – the same day as the groundbreaking ceremony. All proceeds from a lawn sale at the Spring Fling will go towards the gym construction.
There will be an upcoming antiques auction organized by a local resident to benefit the gym, but the date is to be determined, Brown said.
The school drama program will use the gym stage once it is complete. They will be putting on their annual play Fri.-Sat., April 29 and 30 at the Waldo Theatre. All money raised from “In the Shadow of the Cross,” benefits the drama program, but they “sometimes make contributions to other projects, like the gym,” Brown said.
“We’ll save a lot of money by hosting those ourselves and not renting out other venues,” Brown said.
