The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch well in advance of a weather system forecast to chug through Lincoln County on the heaviest travel day of the year – Wednesday, Nov. 26 – the day before Thanksgiving.
The NWS bulletin advises that heavy snowfall in excess of six inches accumulation could visit the area beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into the night. However, other forecasts are indicating that the event may begin with rain or freezing rain, as the precipitation is forecast to begin in the early afternoon hours, while sub-freezing temps may hold off until after nightfall.
“Driving will become treacherous during one of the busiest travel days of the year,” the NWS bulletin warns. Those who are planning to travel on Nov. 26 may be best advised to travel in the morning and mid-day hours. Motorists heading south will likely encounter higher temps, meaning more rainfall than snowfall, through the afternoon hours. Travelers should consider seeking overnight shelter by nightfall. Those traveling by air may want to stay current on their flight status, as this storm will affect airports throughout the northeastern United States.
On the bright side, wind is not forecast to be a major factor in this storm, blowing out of the north at 5 to 10 mph. However, some gusts my reach 25 mph, according to the NWS.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of this event and will post any additional information here as soon as it is obtained.
