Construction will resume in the neighborhood of Hodgdon and Pleasant streets in Damariscotta around Wednesday, Oct. 1 and continue for about 2 1/2 weeks.
Damariscotta contractor Hagar Enterprises Inc. will return to the area to extend the new sidewalk on Pleasant Street to Salt Bay Apartments on Hodgdon Street and install storm drains on Hodgdon Street.
The project is a continuation of a public infrastructure project in the area of Chapman, Church, Hodgdon, and Pleasant streets that started in early April and stopped in late June.
The project consists of drainage improvements, sidewalk construction, and water line replacements.
A $575,000 grant from the Maine Office of Community Development has funded the bulk of the project, which also included the replacement of aging water lines. The town of Damariscotta and the Great Salt Bay Sanitary District contributed additional funds.
The upcoming work represents the final phase of the project, now possible to complete due to the award of an additional $65,000 in grant funds to the town. Another $25,000 remains in the project account. The town estimates the cost of the final phase at $88,000.
Damariscotta Town Manager Matt Lutkus said the new sidewalk will increase pedestrian safety for the residents of the apartment complex, including seniors and people with disabilities.
The storm drains will tie into a new drainage system on Pleasant Street and reduce ice buildup in winter, among other benefits, he said in a memo to the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen.
The selectmen unanimously approved a change order to allow the project to go forward during their meeting Wednesday, Sept. 17.
