A 19-year-old Falmouth man must pay back $18,809 and serve 30 days in jail and three years of probation for forging his Waldoboro grandmother’s checks.
Cody M. Osgood pleaded guilty to class B forgery in Lincoln County Superior Court Aug. 10, according to court documents. The state dismissed a charge of class B theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.
Osgood was sentenced to four years in custody with all but 30 days suspended, as well as three years of probation. He also has to pay $18,809 in restitution to The First N.A. or to the victim.
His probation conditions prohibit the possession or use of alcohol and require him to complete treatment for substance abuse issues, and submit to random search and testing for alcohol and drugs. He also has to pay the full restitution amount.
If Osgood does not pay the full amount or otherwise violates probation, he could return to custody for up to three years and 11 months, the remainder of the four-year sentence.
Osgood stole a book of 30 checks from his grandmother’s cupboard Dec. 5, 2014, according to Waldoboro Police Officer Larry Hesseltine.
“By the time grandma got her bank statement, he had (forged and) cashed $18,800 worth of checks, all written out to himself,” Hesseltine told The Lincoln County News in March. Osgood forged and deposited 23 checks.
“The bank put a stop payment on the remaining seven, which he did cash, and Falmouth (Police Department) is following up on that end of it,” Hesseltine said.
Osgood’s grandmother had to file paperwork with her bank, but did not lose the money, Hesseltine said. Hesseltine summonsed Osgood Jan. 14.
Osgood confessed to the crime.
“I’ve had a rough 18 years, to be honest with you, and I think that’s part of the reason why I did it,” he told The Lincoln County News in March. “I had a couple mental breakdowns and I was abused as a kid and I think that certainly plays a part in it.”
Court documents also list addresses for Osgood in Lyman and Windham.
