The Damariscotta Cemetery Committee adopted a rule banning for-profit activities from Damariscotta’s three municipal cemeteries at its Jan. 3 meeting.
Damariscotta Town Manager Matt Lutkus said the rule is not a response to any specific event in the town.
“The Cemetery Committee observed commercial activities in other Maine communities and wants to prevent this type of use here before it becomes an issue,” Lutkus said.
The rule reads “Commercial enterprises are prohibited in Damariscotta cemeteries. No person shall sell or offer for sale, hire, lease or rent any object, merchandise, property, service or other thing in any cemetery, nor shall any person engage in any commercial enterprise in any cemetery except such as is directly involved in the business of the cemetery.”
