A Damariscotta man faces a felony assault charge after allegedly striking a neighbor repeatedly with a shovel in the trailer park where both men live.
The alleged victim told police that Norman A. Palmer, 26, confronted him and accused him of “slandering his girlfriend” on July 23, Damariscotta Police Officer Jason Warlick said in a statement. The men are neighbors in a trailer park off Egypt Road.
The neighbor denied saying anything about Palmer’s girlfriend, “but Norman did not believe him so he began to strike (the neighbor) with a shovel,” Warlick said.
The neighbor said Palmer “struck him several times in the side of his body causing pain and lasting marks. While Norman was striking (the neighbor) he was telling him to tell the truth and if he did not there would be worse consequences later.”
Warlick arrested Palmer on charges of class B aggravated assault and class E violation of condition of release, a misdemeanor.
Palmer was out on bail at the time of the incident after an arrest for domestic violence assault. He allegedly assaulted the girlfriend he mentioned in the shovel incident.
As of July 31, Palmer remains in custody at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset with bail set at $2,500 cash. He is due to appear in Lincoln County Superior Court at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 28.
A class B crime carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine; a class E crime carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
