A Damariscotta man was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and operating after suspension following an accident where he allegedly missed a stop sign and crashed into a fifth-wheel camper trailer.
Matthew J. Burnham, 23, of Damariscotta, was operating a 2003 Nissan pickup westbound on West Main Street in Waldoboro in the early hours of June 21, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.
Burnham failed to see the stop sign at the street’s intersection with Route 1, crossed Route 1, and struck a Leer truck cap and a fifth-wheel Coachman camper trailer in the parking lot of Gordon Libby Forest Products, Labombarde said.
The tongue of the trailer went through the windshield of the truck, but Burnham sustained only a bump on the head in the accident, Labombarde said.
The two passengers in the back seat of the vehicle, Ashley Deshiro, 24, and Jessica Deshiro, 28, were uninjured, according to Labombarde.
Officer Tom Bartunek arrested Burnham at 1:45 a.m. for allegedly operating under the influence and operating after suspension, and on a warrant for failure to appear and unpaid restitution.
Burnham was taken to LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta for an evaluation and later taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail, Labombarde said.
Burnham was released on bail later that day, according to jail personnel.
