The late Richard Else, formerly of Chase Point in Damariscotta, left $130,625 to the town of Damariscotta in his will.
According to Damariscotta Town Manager Greg Zinser, the town first heard of the bequest on Feb. 8, 2010, receiving the funds in July 2010.
The town will use the sum, following the instructions of Else and an unknown third party, to pay for sidewalk construction.
For the time being, the money will earn interest in an investment account. The town hopes to locate a grant for sidewalk construction and use the bequest as matching funds “to make it go further,” Zinser said.
The town did not use the funds for the Bus. Rt. 1 sidewalk project set to begin later this spring.
According to Else’s obituary in The Lincoln County News, the former carpenter and antique dealer, a native of New York City, died Jan. 24, 2010 at the age of 95.
Else was “survived by several nieces,” according to his obituary, which doesn’t list any further information about his living relatives.
