Damariscotta police are investigating a break-in at The Cook’s Corner.
Damariscotta Police Department Sgt. Jason Warlick said someone gained entry into the business at 603 Main St. during the overnight hours of Thursday-Friday, Sept. 3-4.
Co-owner Christine Schweighauser and employee Shania Brown arrived at the restaurant this morning to find the screen door to the back entrance had been removed and was leaning against a nearby trash can.
The burglar or burglars broke into the cash registers and took what Brown estimated to be $30 in change. Nothing else was taken.
“It’s something all businesses dread,” Brown said. “It’s not as bad as it could have been.”
Schweighauser said she smelled propane when she entered the building. She called AmeriGas in Waldoboro to check the stove out before she turned it on.
The burglary prevented the restaurant from opening at 7 a.m. Schweighauser said she hopes to reopen later today.
Warlick said the police department currently does not have any suspects, however, fingerprints believed to be from the burglar or burglars were pulled from the scene.
It is unknown at this time if the burglary is connected to the recent commercial burglaries in the area, according to Warlick.
The investigation is ongoing. The Damariscotta Police Department asks anyone with information to call the department at 563-1909.
