Damariscotta Police has learned of a phone scam from a resident.
The resident received a phone call from a person posing as an employee of the United States government’s grant department.
They told the resident they were being awarded a $7000 government grant, because they voted and paid their taxes on time. The person also told the resident that over 50,000 people would be receiving this same grant. The resident was told to send $99 via Western Union as a processing fee to receive the grant.
Please warn residents to be aware that this is a scam. If it seems too good to be true it probably is.
You should never have to send money or give personal information, i.e., account numbers, social security numbers, etc. to strangers over the phone.
If you receive similar call, and suspect it is a scam, please call the Damariscotta Police Dept. at 563-1909 or the local police department.
