Damariscotta Superintendent of Roads, Buildings and Grounds Steve Reynolds made his biannual report to the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen at the board’s Dec. 5 meeting.
The report includes the highway department’s activities from the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, to the present, plus a work plan for the next quarter.
The last 5-6 months saw Reynolds and the public works staff complete repairs to the public works garage and the salt shed and replace culverts at several locations around the town.
The crew installed a drain on Chapman Street, removed a troublesome ledge on Lessner Road, did ditch and shoulder work on Branch Road and Hodgdon Street, and graded Heater Road and the roads through Hillside Cemetery.
The department also performed routine maintenance tasks, such as striping parking spaces downtown, dismantling beaver dams, brush- and tree-trimming, cutting grass, weed-whacking and other landscaping; cleaning the gutter lines and sidewalks downtown and emptying trash barrels.
In the coming months, Reynolds and Foreman Hugh Priebe will plow, shovel, snowblow and salt certain town properties and sidewalks.
When it’s not snowing, Reynolds plans to insulate the public works garage, clean up the basement of the town office and perform routine maintenance of equipment and tools.
They will also remove the floats from the town landing Thurs., Dec. 13 and inspect, stain and re-stencil the floats for the 2013 season.
The Damariscotta public works crew, which consists of Reynolds, Priebe and, during the summer, a seasonal laborer, works half-time in Damariscotta and half-time in Newcastle.
