A 62-year-old Scarborough man was killed in a two car collision that occurred in the wake of the severe storm that passed over Lincoln County Dec. 9.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene E. Estes died after he lost control of his vehicle on wet, snow-covered roads. Estes was traveling south on Rt. 27 in Edgecomb when he lost control of his four door Honda Civic and slid into the northbound lane and was struck on the driver’s side by a 1992 Ford Bronco operated by Parker Long, 22, of Boothbay.
Long was transported from the scene by Wiscasset EMS to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta with what appeared to be non-life threatening facial injuries.
According to the LCSO’s preliminary investigation, Estes may have been traveling too fast for the road conditions. Although nothing at the scene indicated that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, blood samples were obtained from both drivers, as is required by law.
Deputies have determined that both drivers involved were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
A Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy on routine patrol discovered the accident around 5:22 p.m.
Edgecomb and Wiscasset Fire Departments, Wiscasset EMS, and the Maine Dept. of Transportation assisted LCSO Deputies at the scene. Rt. 27 was closed to traffic for over two hours while Deputies conducted their investigation.
