Jefferson residents looking for sand for their driveways this winter will be able to get free sand from the town’s new public sand shed.
Over the last few weeks, the town has been in the process of rebuilding the small out-building at the sand/salt shed on Gardiner Road. The town’s insurance company decided the old public sand shed was too close to the larger sand/salt shed, and the old building was too run down to move.
Jefferson Road Commissioner Alan Johnston and Selectman Greg Johnston donated their time to build the new shed, and an anonymous donor contributed “a lot of lumber” to the project, Johnston said.
Johnston said it’s not clear whether there will be any expense to the town, but if there is, it will minimal and paid for out of the town’s winter maintenance budget, which has enough money to cover the project.
Now that the shed is complete, it will be filled with sand for each storm. Jefferson residents are welcome to two free five-gallon buckets of sand per storm.
