The replacement of a failing cross pipe on Route 32 in Waldoboro closed the road to through traffic Sept. 16 and the road could remain closed until Sept. 18.
The replacement is taking place a few hundred feet south of the southern intersection of Ledges Circle with Route 32.
Andrea Glidden, a transportation operations manager for DOT’s Region 2, said the crew is making good headway on the project and the closure may end as early as the evening of Sept. 17.
The closure is separate from a 30-day closure further south on Route 32 in Bremen, where Hagar Enterprises is replacing a culvert for the DOT.
“We have a lot of activity in the area, and a lot of pipes failing. It’s a challenge to keep up with them,” said Mike Burns, the manager of DOT’s Region 2.
The cross pipe replacement in Waldoboro was a planned project, Burns said.
“We thought we would do it during the same time that the other one was being replaced so we didn’t impact traffic during the height of the season, the summer season,” Glidden said.
A marked detour is sending traffic around the Waldoboro closure via Route 1.
From Bremen, northbound traffic can follow either Biscay Road (or Turner Road with a right onto Biscay Road) into Damariscotta, followed by rights onto Business Route 1 and Route 1, which connects back to Route 32 in Waldoboro.
Due to the two closures on Route 32, southbound traffic is being sent west on West Main Street in Waldoboro to Route 1, and then left onto Business Route 1 in Damariscotta.
Most of Bremen and the part of Waldoboro south of the closure can be reached by taking a left from Business Route 1 onto Biscay Road, which connects with Route 32.
The other road closure is located 1.3 miles south of the Biscay Road and Route 32 intersection. For points south of here, including Round Pond, the detour is a series of lefts from Business Route 1 onto School Street, Routes 129 and 130, and Lower Round Pond Road in Bristol, which connects with Route 32.
