Down East magazine named South Bristol an Editors’ Choice as one of the “Best Places to Live in Maine” in its March 2015 cover story.
The article cites South Bristol’s low property taxes and picturesque waterfront among its selling points.
Bangor, Portland, and Yarmouth round out the Editors’ Choice selections. The feature also includes four Readers’ Choice selections: Camden, Hallowell, The Kennebunks, and Norway.
With 887 year-round residents, South Bristol is far and away the smallest town on the list.
“It’s not on the way to anything, there’s no Main Street to speak of, and more than half its residents disappear with the leaves – and yet South Bristol manages to be one of Maine’s most welcoming (and loveliest) coastal towns,” the magazine said.
South Bristol is “unbelievably picturesque – like a Tolkienesque movie set,” Down East Design Director Mirek Jurek said in the article.
The magazine considered all 494 cities, plantations, and towns in Maine for the story.
