A Dresden woman who allegedly drove away in a Jeep Grand Cherokee while another woman and her child were leaning into the front passenger seat, injuring the 1-year-old boy, has been indicted on felony charges.
Rachel Corson, 44, was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on a Class B charge of aggravated assault, Class C reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a misdemeanor.
An indictment is simply an opinion that enough evidence exists to pursue further legal action, not a determination of guilt.
Brunswick police responded to a Creekside village parking lot the afternoon of Aug. 3, when the alleged victim reported that after an argument erupted during a family gathering, Corson allegedly got into her Jeep Grand Cherokee and prepared to drive off, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said at the time.
As Corson attempted to leave, the alleged victim, who was carrying her son, opened the passenger-side front door and attempted to remove something from the vehicle’s glove box, according to Hagan.
Corson allegedly backed up the Jeep Grand Cherokee and struck the child with the open vehicle door, Hagan said. She then allegedly drove away.
Brunswick rescue workers treated the child at the scene for a minor head laceration.
If convicted of the Class B crime, Corson faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. The Class C crime carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail, and the misdemeanor up to a year in jail.
