Rep. Lisa Miller (D-Somerville) has arranged for volunteers in Whitefield and Jefferson to help speed DSL Internet access for customers of Verizon successor FairPoint Communications.
Miller spoke last week with two FairPoint lobbyists in the halls of the State House, asking them when the company would be expanding Internet access to the towns she represents.
“They said they will be starting soon but that consumer interest definitely helps them decide where to work first. They even suggested petitions or lists of folks who want coverage,” the legislator said.
With town meetings or referendum voting approaching, Miller thought those occasions would be a good time to collect names and phone numbers, especially of customers in Jefferson and Whitefield, “where large portions of town are not well covered,” she said.
In Jefferson, which has a public hearing on its warrant this Thursday with the vote on March 31, Joe Bodnar will be collecting the information. At Whitefield’s Saturday town meeting at the school, starting at 2 p.m., Jim Hatch will be the go-to guy.
