An East Boothbay man is okay after he suffered a medical issue that caused an unusual single-vehicle accident in East Boothbay Tuesday morning, March 10.
Norman H. Lind, 80, was driving a 2008 Subaru Outback station wagon south on Ocean Point Road (Route 96) near the East Boothbay General Store when he experienced the medical issue, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Mercier.
According to descriptions by Mercier and others, the car crossed the centerline, the southbound lane, and a sidewalk; climbed a snowbank, went airborne over a driveway, and landed in a front yard, where deep snow slowed the vehicle down.
Tire tracks are visible in a snowbank alongside Ocean Point Road in East Boothbay Tuesday, March 10. A northbound station wagon crossed the centerline of the road, the southbound lane, and a sidewalk; climbed this snowbank, went airborne over a driveway, and landed in the front yard of the house in the background, where deep snow slowed the vehicle, but did not stop a low-speed collision with the house. The vehicle came to rest against the side door of a house at 254 Ocean Point Rd., across from the general store.
Lind was not injured in the accident, Mercier said. Boothbay Region Ambulance Service transported him to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for evaluation. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
The station wagon “vaulted” over the driveway, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ken Mason said. “There are no tire tracks till the lawn … the snow slowed him down and all he did was knock at the side door.”
“It’s a lucky day,” Mason said.
Mason was not sure how fast the man was driving at the time of the accident. “He wasn’t going too crazy, because if he was going really fast, he’d be into the house,” he said.
The car did not appear to have significant damage, although there was some damage to the house, Mercier said.
Lind was wearing a seat belt and the Subaru’s airbags did not deploy, Mason said.
The Boothbay Fire Department, the Boothbay Harbor Police Department, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
